GM PeopleFinder, OrgView and Profile
The Challenge
GM needed a unified interface to search, view, and understand employee information across an organization of over 200,000 people. Existing tools were fragmented, inconsistent, and difficult to navigate, and much of the legacy system was outdated and unintuitive. This made it hard for employees to find the right contact or understand where someone fit within the company. The challenge was to design a modern, intuitive experience that could handle massive organizational complexity while remaining fast, scalable, and easy to use.
The Process
I started by auditing GM’s existing tools to understand where users were getting stuck and what functionality was duplicated or missing. I met with cross-functional stakeholders from HR, IT, and design to define goals, identify data sources, and map out user needs across different roles and access levels.
From there, I created user flows that focused on simplifying search, browsing the org chart, and viewing employee profiles. I sketched early concepts and moved into wireframes to explore how to present complex organizational data in a way that felt clean and navigable. Throughout the process, I focused on mobile responsiveness, accessibility, and performance at scale.
Once wireframes were tested with internal users, I built high-fidelity prototypes and collaborated closely with engineers to ensure design feasibility. I also created a system of reusable UI components to support long-term consistency across related internal tools.
Regular feedback loops helped refine the interaction design, especially around search behavior, hierarchy visibility, and profile data clarity. The final product significantly improved employee discoverability and helped teams understand who they work with, at every level of the company.
The Results
The new experience replaced multiple outdated tools with a single, streamlined platform for searching, viewing, and understanding GM’s workforce. Search speed and accuracy improved significantly, and employees were able to find coworkers and navigate the org structure with far less friction.
The tool supported over 200,000 employee profiles and scaled smoothly across desktop and mobile. Internal feedback highlighted major improvements in usability, clarity, and trust in the data presented. Adoption was strong across departments, and the design system elements created for this project were later reused in other internal applications, helping standardize the internal design language.
